COADY’S TIME MACHINE

Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:38

Here’s a blast from the past—Barry Coad receives the Rookie Of The year award from (the late) Bill Ball way back in the summer of 1982-83. He was only 19. Now Barry is the King Of The Rookies! This weekend, he and his merry band of cricketing Colts take on Gordon at Chatswood Oval in the grand final of the Metropolitan Colts competition. As many Club members as possible should turn up to support them (10am Saturday, 9am Sunday).

Barry came down from Dubbo with his parents all those almost-30 years ago to further his education, and on the way he stuck his nose in at the Penrith Cricket Club, where he showed enough talent to be chosen in the Club’s very first Poidevin-Gray premiership-winning team—captained by none other than Trevor Bayliss! His talent soon saw him promoted to Second Grade and his sparkling 124 against Petersham-Marrickville (now Randwick-Petersham) shot him into First Grade for the second half of the 1983-84 season. He went on to score nearly 4000 runs for the Club.

Now he’s 48 and not quite as fit as he used to be, yet this season he accepted the challenge to help in the development of some very good young cricketers. The Colts is a challenge because the make-up of the team is always very flexible, those Friday night dropouts in the higher grades creating mayhem. The team finished third and has won both the preliminary final and the semi most convincingly, outright. Coady has moulded them well. There have been century batting efforts from Ashlyn Govender and Josh Dowd and some excellent pace bowling by Alex Henry and Jackson Edwards. Coady made 30 in the second innings of the semi against North Sydney. Not much to write home about? Thing is, it was one of those back-to-the-wall innings that initially dragged the team out of a difficult spot—5/42, and a paltry overall lead of just 89 and plenty of time to play. Then he and son Lachlan put on nearly 50, a partnership that pretty much scuttled North Sydney’s outright hopes.

Gordon will be tough at the weekend. Coady is philosophical: “Win lose or draw we have all enjoyed this year greatly.” So says the rest of the Club.

HEROES IN NEW PASTURES

Sunday, 18 March 2012 15:50

They came from the country to play at Penrith, where they became two of the Club’s finest players and today, years after their careers waned, they remain firm friends. Trevor Bayliss (Goulburn) and David Taylor (Dubbo) scored nearly 20,000 runs between them. Now they are putting something back into the game that gave them, and those who watched them, so much pleasure.

TB returned home this season, after a successful coaching stint with Sri Lanka, to start developing some new coaching initiatives. Long term the Club will be stronger for his input, and will play better cricket. He will be splitting his time at Penrith with coaching gigs in the IPL (Kolkata Knight Riders) and the BBL (Sydney 6ers). In late June he will run his eyes over the PGs squad.

Shakey Taylor is now looking at the game from a different perspective—umpire! And, that’s not a seeing eye dog with him! He has risen rapidly through the ranks to First Grade status. He will be umpiring higher grades in the preliminary finals now under way. Prospects look good for a representative opportunity in the near future.

They are a great example to all Club cricketers of any age: to keep the game strong at any level you’ve got to stay involved.
