WIN! PENRITH 8/179 def WESTS 134

Well Finally the campaign has begun after a very long preparation. Facing the runners up Wests from last year, Penrith were going to have to show some class in the middle of Pratten Park. Unfortunately after the loss of Kaine Balgowan, one of our opening bowlers, the other opening bowler in Rhyley Wilson was ruled out due to a thumb injury.

Western Suburbs won the toss and very surprisingly had a bowl. At the start of the days play the wicket was ideal for batting. Cameron Weir and James Newton started proceedings but shortly after James was dismissed. Penrith were under some pressure being 2/22. Whools came to the crease, combining with Cameron Weir to put on 57. As the wicket started to slow up and crumble, Weir, Wholohan and New lost their wicket to the cut shot which went straight to point. The cats were 5/98 leading into the lunch interval. After lunch the boys came out strong. AJ, Tom Farnell and Jesse Curnow made very handy contributions in the middle order. The runs were flowing at this stage. Jake Hausfeld made a solid 21 not out at the conclusion of the innings. After a well fought comeback, the boys reached 8/179 after 60 overs.

Without 2 of our strike bowlers, left arm "ortho" AJ took the new ball with Josh O 'Grady. It was a tidy start without success. Cameron Weir was the first man to get the break through trapping their opening bat infront. The wicket was starting to really show signs of crumble and other weird things. Weiry dismissed the other opening batsmen with a healthy edge straight to Jesse Curnow. Their captain came in and held their innings together. Unfortunately for him, he witnessed 3 runouts from the other end! Penrith were starting to play some gutsy cricket. Ashlyn Govender bowled good length ball which rolled and trapped their number 6. After 53.1 overs Wests were all out 134.

Match Summary - Penrith 8/179 (Weir 35, Wholohan 31, Hausfeld 21*, Isherwood & Farnell 18) def Wests 134 (Isherwood 1/15 off 12, Weir 2/15 off 8, Wholohan 2/41 off 11, 3 runouts.

Lou Benaud Cup - Penrith vs Parramatta

PoorBest

On Sunday the 9th of October, Penrith went head to head with Parramatta in the Annual "Lou Benaud Cup" Green Shield trial match. This event is held at the famous Bradman Oval in Bowral and hosted by our one and only John Benaud. After Penrith coming off a loss last year, the boys were determined to win this event. This match was 40 over a side fixture. Former Penrith first grader David Taylor was one of the Men in Black and White while Arthur Watson was the other.

Even though with a lot of rain around over the past week, batting first was still a good approach. Penrith lost the loss and were sent in to bat. 4th Grade opener Cameron Weir was cleaned up early but Jake Hausfeld held down one end batting very sensibly. Nephew of Liam Zammit and Brett Newman, Brent Atherton came in a number 3. He played a very positive brand of cricket and made a solid 46. After 20 overs Penrith were 1/36. Things were looking a little ominous. Brent once again batted very well along with "Haus". Haus was dismissed for 34 in the 36th over. Captain Jake Wholohan came in with 3 and 1/2 overs to spare and hit a quick fire 24 not out. Penrith put on a much more competitive score than what was expected after 20 overs. Penrith finished 3/123 after 40 overs. At the conclusion of the innings, John Benaud hosted a Lunch Function which was extremely well done. Brilliant food!

Penrith took the field, and with a bit of cloud around the brand new kookaburra was swinging everywhere. Rhyley Wilson and Josh O'Grady took the new ball and did the business. Rhyley took the first wicket in the 4th over while Josh picked one up in the 9th over. Parramatta Captain Blake Newman walked to the crease. We needed to knock him over quickly otherwise the game would've completely changed. Unfortunately he smashed 46 of about 25 deliveries including 2 massive sixes. Young leg spinner Laughlin James got the vital break through. But unfortunately the business was already done. Parramatta passed the score in the 37th over, 5 down. It was a narrow result, but one innings was the difference.

Match Summary - Penrith 3/123 (Atherton 46, Hausfeld 34, Wholohan 24*) Parramatta 5/125 (O'Grady 1/17, Wilson 1/18, Farnell 1/20, James 2/26)
