E-mail Print PDF

State selectors have named a squad of 13 players for the 2012/13 Cricket Australia U/15 Female National Championships to be played in Western Sydney from 28 November – 4 December 2012.

The full squad for the Championships is (clubs/regions in brackets):

Danielle Armstrong (Penrith)
Ashley Day (Penrith)
Amy Edgar (Penrith/Western)
Mikayla Hinkley (Penrith)
Tilly Power (Penrith/Western)

Jemma Astley (Northern District/Central Coast)
Lauren Cheatle (Campbelltown-Camden/Illawarra-Southern)
Saskia Horley (Gordon)
Clara Iemma (Universities)
Angel Lea (Sydney)
Carly Leeson (North Coast)
Hannah Trethewy (Campbelltown-Camden)
Belinda Vakarewa (Campbelltown City)

Four members of the squad, Astley, Cheatle, Edgar and Iemma were members of the NSW team which finished fourth at these Championships last summer, with Tilly Power also representing the ACT last season. The captain and vice-captain will be named at the conclusion of a State Camp from November 8-10.

The NSW team will be coached by Lend Lease Breakers and Australian veteran, Lisa Sthalekar, with another experienced Breakers player, Sarah Aley, the Assistant Coach.

Sthalekar said she was looking forward to seeing the NSW winning the U/15 National title for the first time since the 2008/09 summer.

“The U/15 Nationals are always an exciting tournament as for many of these girls, this is the first time that they get to represent NSW. We are fortunate that this is the second National Championship for several members of the squad, and their experience will be vital to helping us win the Christina Matthews Shield for the first time since 2008/09,” she said.

The NSW U/15 team was selected at the conclusion of the City vs Country series, played last weekend at Blacktown International Sportspark (October 27-28). City retained the Belinda Robertson-Haggett Shield after winning both the T20 matches, and the 40 over fixture.

One of the greatest fast bowlers in cricket history visited Howell Oval on Tuesday October 9 to launch a breast cancer fundraising campaign initiated by our own young gun, Brent Williams.

The great Glenn McGrath made the trek out west to launch "Brent's blast against breast cancer" which has been established to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation.

A friend of the Williams family is currently battling breast cancer, which inspired 'Squirt' to take action.

"I have seen how debilitating breast cancer can be and I approached the Penrith committee about raising some funds to help the McGrath Foundation this summer,” Brent said.

“In a matter of a few weeks, we came up with a concept that would see the Penrith club donate to the McGrath Foundation $1 per run that I score this season, and from there, appeal to the local business community to do the same.

“We decided that the best way to get the message out was by asking Glenn McGrath to personally launch the fundraising campaign, and I am delighted that he made the effort to travel to Howell Oval for a media launch. He's a great bloke.

"The local press were fantastic and I have to thank them for their support. I understand that it will receive some pretty prominent coverage this week so hopefully a few businesses will kick in and we can raise a nice amount of cash.

"I just need to start getting a few runs!!"

HOW DOES IT WORK?

- The Penrith Club has pledged a donation of $1 per run Brent scores to the McGrath Foundation.

- We are seeking local businesses to do the same.

- Interested parties should contact the club via email (mathew.thompson@betfair.com) or see President Greg Gavin.

- One-off donations can also be made via the McGrath Foundation website http://mcgrathfoundation.gofundraise.com.au/page/brentsblast

- Regular updates on Brent's tally will be uploaded to the website and on social media.

- We are aiming to raise upwards of $5000 this summer.
